What we review

Bring the complete notice, the tax period and your payment and filing records. We distinguish an incorrect assessment from a request for relief, and review the specific penalty rather than treating every charge the same way.

Three relief paths to discuss

First-Time Abate (FTA)

This administrative relief considers a recent history of timely compliance. A request is needed, and the IRS reviews its account records. We help identify the relevant years and questions to raise.

Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP)

The IRS began its AEP transition in summer 2026 for eligible 2025 annual and 2026 quarterly returns. AEP can prevent specified late-filing, late-payment or late-deposit penalties when an original return is processed and eligibility requirements are met. An assessed penalty still needs attention if you believe relief should have applied.

Reasonable cause

Facts such as serious illness or a disaster may support relief when they explain why you could not meet an obligation despite reasonable care. Evidence and timing matter. Lack of funds alone or relying on a preparer generally does not establish reasonable cause for late filing or payment. Different penalties have different standards.

For a fuller explanation, read our IRS penalty-abatement guide and the IRS administrative-relief rules.

How RnM Advisory helps prepare a request

  1. Identify: review the notice, penalty type, tax year and response instructions.
  2. Compare: organize returns, receipts, account correspondence and any prior decision.
  3. Document: build a concise timeline and connect supporting evidence to the relevant events.
  4. Prepare and follow up: help with an appropriate request and explain which copies and confirmations to keep.

We do not promise that the IRS will remove a penalty. We explain the proposed scope and any service fee before a paid engagement.

What to bring

  • The full IRS notice and envelope, plus any denial letter.
  • Relevant returns, extensions and payment confirmations.
  • A list of affected tax years and penalties.

Frequently asked questions

Does penalty abatement cancel the tax balance?

No. Penalty relief does not erase the underlying tax. A remaining balance may need a separate payment arrangement; see our IRS payment plan help.

What happens to interest?

When a penalty is reduced or removed, the IRS adjusts related interest. That does not eliminate all interest on unpaid tax.

How is a request submitted?

The notice and applicable procedure control. Some requests can be handled by phone; others require a written request or Form 843. We review the appropriate route for the penalty involved.

What if I already received a denial?

Bring the decision and its instructions so the available response or appeal steps can be reviewed promptly.
